Dad-Up Basics

BUILD A FIRE. PASS ON A LEGACY.

You don’t need to be a survival show star — you just need to show up, teach your son, and do it with courage. Fire-building is one of those small lessons that sticks for a lifetime.

Here’s how you do it together.

How to Build a Fire — Simple, Safe, Sacred

1. Tinder first. Dry leaves, birch bark, or shredded paper — that’s your spark stuff.
2. Kindling next. Pencil-thin sticks. Don’t rush it. Let the tinder catch.
3. Log structure. Teepee or log-cabin style — give it air. Fire breathes, just like faith.
4. Light it together. Let your son strike the match or click the lighter. Make that his moment.
5. Feed it slow. Add bigger wood as it grows. Patience builds stronger flames — and stronger men.

Safety first: adults only for any torch or flame tool. Keep fuel away from kids, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, keep a bucket of water or dirt nearby, and never, ever leave a fire unattended.

Teach Your Son to Make Campfire S’mores (or “Smokes”)

Once the flames die down and you’ve got glowing coals, it’s time to make memories.

Here’s how:

Grab your gear: long stick or roasting fork, marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers.

Toast, don’t torch. Hold the marshmallow over the coals, not the flame. Let him learn patience — slow and golden beats fast and burned.

Assemble with care. One cracker, one chocolate square, one toasted marshmallow — press it together. Sticky fingers. Big smiles.

Talk while you eat. Tell him about your first campfire. Ask about his favorite part of the day. These are the small, sacred moments where boys start to understand what being a man really means.

Camp Coffee & Hot Chocolate — The Morning Sermon in a Mug

Coffee for Dad:
Heat clean water over the coals in a metal pot. Add grounds, let it steep a minute, pour slow. Strong coffee, quiet heart.

Hot Chocolate for Your Boy:
Heat milk or water, stir in cocoa, top with a marshmallow if you’re the heroic type. Hand it to him warm. Those first sips — before the world wakes up — are where real talks happen.
